Up early for 8am pick-up for the tour of Halong Bay. After 3 hours on the bus from Hanoi we arrived at Halong City port where our boat (plus many others!) was waiting.
Halong Bay comprises over 3000 islands in the Gulf of Tonkin and is a Unesco World Heritage site. Featured on the BBC’s ‘Planet Earth’, this is one place we’ve been looking forward to visiting for a long time!
After boarding our ‘junk’ (traditional boat) we motored out into Halong Bay passing loads of small limestone islands that towered over us. Although overcast views were still amazing. First stop was Thien Cung and Dau Go caves where we spent an hour or so wandering through before getting back onto our boat and motering on. Next we headed to some small floating fishing villages which were interesting, floating nets where fish were kept and fed up for sale.
Late afternoon while cruising through the islands a mist descended which gave quite an eerie feel as it got dark. We dropped anchor fro the night with other boas nearby dimly lighting our surroundings and casting long shadows which were a pretty impressive sight.
Halong Tour one day is the most memorable journey in ourr life.
